Every year, the Foundation raises funds and solicits gifts-in-kind to support the Newfoundland & Labrador Book Awards, the only awards in the province that recognize excellence for published works in four key genres: poetry, fiction, non-fiction and children/youth literature. We also seek funding for the Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers, which is given to the unpublished author with the best manuscript. In addition to a cash award and a tremendous confidence boost, Fresh Fish winners receive professional editing of their manuscript.
Each award provides critical recognition for writers. Related readings, advertisements and other promotional activities help build profile and stir interest in great books.
The Foundation recently established a Book Prize at Memorial University for students who excel in the study of Newfoundland and Labrador literature.
In 2009, we plan to offer first-ever intensive writers’ retreat at Kilmory Resort. We expect to develop this into an annual, highly-effective educational opportunity for emerging and established writers and poets in the province. More information about this exciting opportunity coming in June!
The Foundation's long-term goal is the establishment of an endowment that will provide stable funding to programs and awards that both recognize excellence and promote appreciation for the literature of our province.
